Guide to house cleaning after Christmas

Christmas and New Year have come and gone – and you are probably a little overwhelmed with all the cleaning that was needed. Read on for Maid App tips on how to stay in control of your housework over the festive period, to make sure you are prepped and ready next time.

We all look forward to Christmas and New Year, especially in 2020, as it usually allows us the time to spend with our family and friends, sharing traditional meals and generally having fun. But, as with any celebration, when fun is had with family and friends, there tends to be clearing up that needs to be done afterwards as well! Wiping up spilt drinks, vacuuming up crumbs, and washing lots and lots of dirty dishes are just some of the jobs that you will normally need to tackle during the festive period – but these tasks should not prevent you from enjoying the festive season along with everyone else. Whether you are planning on hosting your whole family next Christmas, having a drinks party for friends, or just inviting the neighbours round for a cuppa, here are a few suggestions from cleaners st asaph which should help you stay in control of your housework.

Be organised ahead of time

Doing a thorough clean before Christmas is a surefire way to make sure everything is clean, tidy and spotless before your guests arrive – and will help you get into a more manageable cleaning routine. It will also minimise the time you, or your maid service oxford, has to spend cleaning up after everyone has left.

This checklist is a great way to ensure you are ahead of the game:

Pre-Christmas cleaning checklist

  • Wash and polish any special cutlery, glassware and dishes you intend to use
  • Make sure you have enough cutlery, glassware, dishes and chairs – and source more if you haven’t
  • Think about using paper plates and disposable cutlery if you are having a buffet and feeding a large amount of people
  • Iron all of your table linens so they are ready
  • Clean all of your carpets and upholstery
  • Make sure you have plenty of rubbish bins that are clean, and make them accessible in the areas you expect your guests to be
  • Buy extra boxes of tissues and leave them around the room so people can quickly grab them if they spill something
  • Make sure your washing basket is empty – ready to be refilled again!
  • Stock up on the necessary cleaning essentials, such as detergent, dishwashing tabs, kitchen paper, rubbish bags and toilet paper
  • Stock up on stain removers
  • Make sure any special outfits you are planning on wearing are clean and the zips and buttons work

Consider giving back to the community next Christmas

2020 was a struggle for us all, but some people have struggled more than others. Why not plan to be more charitable and generous next Christmas by also thinking about those who less fortunate than ourselves? Some practical ways you can help are:

  • Cleaning and sorting out your cupboards ready for an influx of presents – and giving unwanted items such as books, clothes and toys to charity
  • Distributing unwanted or leftover bunches of flowers to elderly neighbours or local nursing homes
  • Making extra portions of food and donating them to homeless shelters, or buy extra tins of things and donate them to a local food bank

Maintain a good cleaning routine

The sooner you can get into an organised cleaning routine, the easier it will be for you to transition back into your routine after Christmas is over. Keep these tips in mind when putting your cleaning routine into place:

Pre-Christmas:

  • Clear up spills straight away and tackle stains as soon as they happen – it will mean it is more likely that they will come out
  • Sweep floors and vacuum carpets more frequently to keep on top of things
  • Empty all of your recycling and rubbish bins
  • Check you have enough toilet roll and tissues
  • Clean your toilet and hand basin
  • Make sure all food is covered and put in the fridge/freezer before you go to bed in order to make sure it doesn’t spoil

Post-Christmas

  • Wash, dry and put away all cutlery, glassware and tableware
  • Dry clean or wash any of the special clothing that you wore before storing them away
  • Take down any special decorations, dust them and store them away carefully for next year
  • Prepare a meal plan to use up your leftovers
  • Make a list of items you are missing, so that you can buy or make them in time for next Christmas
