Become a Cleaner

If you love keeping your house gleaming and immaculate and want to work independently, then you should consider becoming a cleaner.

When you sign up as a cleaner through Maid App you will be able to see cleaning jobs in your area and get in touch with potential customers, to help them with the cleanliness and tidiness of their own home. The beauty of Maid App is that you can chose what hours you are available to work, so you can choose to cover standard hours or go for a more flexible offering if you want to work around your family and any other commitments.

One common question many cleaners ask is “do I need to take my own cleaning equipment or use the customers?” Again, the choice is up to you, as during the sign-up process you can choose to use your own equipment or customers – whatever you prefer.

What do cleaning customers like (and what do they dislike)?

The main thing that customers want from their cleaner is quality work. They want to know that you have great attention to detail, and don’t leave any stone unturned. If you can get regular work with a cleaning customer then you will start to learn their cleaning likes and dislikes and if you consistently go above and beyond, then your cleaning relationship should flourish.

Another important skill that cleaners need to show is that they are courteous and trustworthy. How you deal with your customers can be make or break for your business as it can attract new customers (or repel them if you get it wrong.)

Trustworthiness is also key. Your customer is allowing a complete stranger into their house and they are not going to hire someone they feel like they can’t trust.

Something else many customers like is good communication and a quick response to any messages. A lot of cleaners drop the ball when it comes to communicating with customers, but with Maid App it is really easy to stay in touch. We have an in-built chat system which makes it super easy for cleaners to keep in touch with clients and vice versa. You can also contact them by telephone once you have marked them as clients.

How to charge your cleaning customers?

Choosing how to charge your cleaning customers is really important, as if you go too high or too low then your business will fail before you even start.

There are lots of different things that can affect the price you set, including:

  • The type of cleaning services you are going to offer
  • The size and condition of the property you are going to be cleaning
  • The location of the property and how long it will take you to travel there
  • How frequently the client wants you to clean for them

Most cleaners that sign up through Maid App chose to charge a set price per hour, as it makes record-keeping and recording much easier. It will also help you when it comes to minimum wage and other legal regulations.

Typical charges per hour

How much you decide to charge as a cleaner will depend on you largely, but typical charges per hour can vary from around £10 right up to £23 an hour.

As with most things, cleaners who live in the South will likely be able to charge more than cleaners that live in the North.

How to take payment

Again, it is up to you how you take payment from your cleaning customers, but most cleaners that sign up through our app choose to be paid through bank transfer either by weekly or monthly standing order (depending on the frequency of the clean.)

You may choose to be paid in cash and that’s OK, but it is not so common these days.

How often will clients want their properties cleaning?

Your clients will probably make a decision on how often they want you to come and clean their home, based on how big their house is, how often they want their house cleaned, their lifestyle, and most importantly, their budget.

If they clean their own home during the week then they may only want you to come every other week or even just once a month. If they are trying to balance a demanding work schedule with a long commute and family activities, then they may want you to clean their home for them once a week.

What types of clean are offered?

There are various types of clean offered by the independent cleaners who are signed up to Maid App, and these include:

  • Domestic Cleaning – includes basic dusting of all items and surfaces, and floor cleaning either using the vacuum or mopping.
  • Deep Cleaning – includes the same tasks as a domestic clean, and then some extra tasks to make sure your house it super clean
  • End of Tenancy Clean – this is a clean that takes place when a tenant leaves a property, so that it is left in the best condition for the next tenant to move in.

What are the key differences between commercial and residential cleaning?

Residential cleaning is a cleaning service that is offered by local independent cleaners and which specialises in cleaning people’s homes and smaller residences, while commercial cleaning is usually for larger business premises and takes place on a daily basis.

  • Area of coverage – Residential cleaning takes place in residential properties which tend to be smaller areas. Commercial cleaning takes place on commercial premises which are larger areas.
  • Person responsible – Residential cleaning is usually carried out by the home owner, or they may opt for a professional cleaner to take care of the cleaning tasks on their behalf. Commercial cleaning tends to be done by a team of people as it is more efficient
  • Materials used – The cleaning materials and tools used for commercial cleaning are very powerful, and often too powerful to be used in a domestic setting. Residential cleaning tends to rely on the same sprays and polishes that you would use yourself
